Electronics and data systems company McLaren Applied is delivering prototypes of the latest generation of an inverter to customers for further development and testing. The company unveiled the production-intent design of the Inverter Platform Generation 5 (IPG5) at the recent Future Propulsion Conference 2022, and plans to begin full production in 2024.

Designed for automotive applications, the IPG5 is an 800 V silicon carbide inverter that can power motors at power levels up to 350 kW (peak) or 250 kW (continuous). McLaren says the IPG5 “switches more efficiently than conventional inverters, producing less heat and enabling a smaller cooling system—all of which reduce the weight and cost of the drivetrain.”

The IPG5 meets the ISO 26262 ASIL-D standards, and is available without a case for system integrators.
